Emma Bishop

This month’s Young Rider is Emma Bishop, a super talented eventing rider who has made a big impression on the well-known names around her.

Emma hails from Cassilis in New South Wales where her parents run a Merino sheep property. Upon completing her education in 2001 she became a working pupil at Heath and Rozzie Ryan’s property.

“I worked at the Ryan’s property as soon as I finished school,” explains Emma.

“I learned so much with Heath and Rozzie for the eleven years I was with them, but the most important lessons was to work hard and keep persevering even if you feel like giving up.

“I found that no matter what it was, by keeping focused and pushing forward no matter what it is always pays off in the end.”

In December 2017, Emma blitzed the eventing world after competing at the Wallaby Hill three day event on CP Issey Miyake to win the OTTO Sports 3* on a total score of 50.7. They were competing against Australian Olympians on their best horses and managed to bring home the win.

“The whole of 2017 for me was spent preparing for Wallaby Hill,” said Emma.

“I was really focused on us winning and the dedication really paid off.

“There was obviously months of preparation that went into that competition and was the first three star year for my horse.

“We didn’t know if she’d be a three star horse but she handled it all really well and I was so proud of how she jumped the day after a big cross country course.

“She made her time and jumped the best she’s ever done and of course I was super happy with her performance.

“It was a huge relief to win after so many months of dedication to one competition.” With Emma’s vast experience she offers some great advice to young and old riders alike.

“You don’t have to ride amazingly well to have success,” said Emma.

“Keep focused, have great discipline and aim for your long term goals. Even if you have a few bad rides you shouldn’t give up – just keep trying.

“That’s the secret to success.”
